Nutcracker at the London Coliseum
National Portrait Gallery
Kensington Palace
The ‘Nutcracker’ is a firm favourite with the English National Ballet, and has a special place in the hearts of audiences. The company have performed a version of it every year since it was founded in 1950. 2024/25 sees the premiere of a new production of this enchanting classic, and has been choreographed by the Ballet’s Artistic Director Aaron S Watkin and Olivier Award-winner Arielle Smith who bring new magic and wonder to this adored ballet. It will be brought to life through the spectacular new costumes and sets designed by Dick Bird and the instantly recognisable Tchaikovsky score is played live by the English National Ballet Philharmonic.
The new re-telling of this wondrous adventure is revived with over 100 dancers and musicians, and will transport you from Edwardian London to a frozen winter wonderland and a magical Land of Sweets. Clara and her mother are shopping on Christmas Eve at Drosselmeyer’s Sweets and Delights Emporium. The magic begins when an enchanted Nutcracker doll catches Clara’s eye, and is later presented to her at the family party. Later in the evening, Clara quietly creeps downstairs to the Nutcracker and falls asleep. As time and reality fade, the now life-sized Nutcracker and Rat King battle. Clara fatally injures the Rat King as she goes to the rescue of the Nutcracker! Joining the Nutcracker, who has transformed into a young prince, on an adventure they travel to a glistening winter kingdom and then on to the summer Land of Sweets and Delights and meet the Sugar Plum Fairy. When Clara awakens she questions whether her adventure was all just a dream?
